Words From a Poet: Don’t Compromise Your Value For Synthetic Love From Social Media

Referring back to Brené Brown, she defined worthiness as “the conviction that you are good enough as you are, flaws and all, and that you deserve to be loved,” according to Shortform. Back in 2013, Brown shared with Oprah, “Most of us think, ‘I’m pretty worthy of love and belonging — but I’d be super worthy of love and belonging if I could lose 15 pounds, [Or] I made partner. Or my wife doesn’t leave. Or I stay sober’ –- or whatever our thing is.”

The New York Times Best Selling Author (six times over might I add) connected worthiness with wholeheartedness stating, “Worthiness is an as-is, here and now proposition. And to me, that’s the definition of wholeheartedness. Wholeheartedness is about engaging with the world from a place of worthiness.”

Feeling unworthy isn’t uncommon especially in the environment of today with the world at our fingertips through those small black mirrors. Naturally, we are going to compare. We compare our physical appearance, our lifestyle, our career, our friends and so on. The thing is though, it’s toxic. It’s not healthy for our soul and definitely not healthy for our minds. It’s important to recognize when you begin to convince yourself of being unworthy due to materialistic things that carry little value.

In Tyler’s words:

If you’re feeling low, then look in the mirror

Stop feeling sorry for yourself

Stop giving in to fear

You need true love to keep on living

But not true love from someone else

You need the love that we create

Inside for ourselves

Nobody can give you more than you need

In life besides yourself

Don’t rely on Facebook likes

Twitter retweets or Instagram hearts

That don’t value you as a human being

Listen to me…you are stronger than you think

Your life is a blessing…just like the world

Was blessed the day you began existing

You are a valuable human being with the right

To not ever need anyone’s approval,

So who cares what they think?

Hold your fist in the air,

Look right at them & scream

“Im doing this for me & everyone else

who believes in dreams!”
