We all want to believe that we’re invincible, that we can just keep going like the energizer bunny does. But, we all also learn that just isn’t possible. Maybe some of us can last longer than others but eventually, there is a crash- your body shuts down and you become overwhelmed. The moment you have a second of nothing, everything you’ve been doing and everything else you’ve been depriving yourself of just hits you like bricks and you have no choice but to slow things down, take a couple of steps back, a breathe.

Jennifer Lopez recently talked about a time in her life that forced her to reevaluate her lifestyle in order to continue progressing in her career and personal life.

In her July 11 newsletter, JLo wrote, “There was a time in my life where I used to sleep 3 to 5 hours a night. I’d be on set all day and in the studio all night and doing junkets and filming videos on the weekends. I was in my late 20s and I thought I was invincible.”

She continued, “Until one day, I was sitting in a trailer, and all the work and the stress it brought with it, coupled with not enough sleep to recuperate mentally, caught up with me.”

She explained what was verified by her doctor to be a “classic panic attack brought on by exhaustion,” to be paralyzing. She wrote, “I was completely frozen” and added in “I thought I was losing my mind.”

JLo shared that her doctor assured her she was going crazy however, she did need to improve her sleep schedule to “get 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night.” She was also informed “don’t drink caffeine, and make sure you get your workouts in if you’re going to do this much work.”

Lopez confessed to letting go of her own personal needs regarding self-care and wrote, ” realized how serious the consequences could be of ignoring what my body and mind needed to be healthy — and that’s where my journey to wellness began.”

The Time Machine Called Sleep

“I think of sleep like a little time machine. You lay down and you go into a space where you preserve yourself and then you come out a new, younger person than you were before,” wrote Lopez. “Sometimes I wake up and say, ‘Wow! I just lost 10 years off my face!’ That’s what a good night’s sleep can do for you, and it accumulates over time.”

The Sleep Foundation tells us, “Sleep is an essential function that allows your body and mind to recharge, leaving you refreshed and alert when you wake up. Healthy sleep also helps the body remain healthy and stave off diseases. Without enough sleep, the brain cannot function properly. This can impair your abilities to concentrate, think clearly, and process memories.”

JLo concluded in her newsletter, “For better or for worse, the pandemic slowed us all down, and it definitely slowed me down and made me realize that all we have control of is ourselves.”

I couldn’t agree more. Although the pandemic was a challenging time for other reasons, learning how to live a slower life was a positive to come out of it. With all of these technological advancements allowing the world to move at a faster pace, we have lost control of over time (or at least it feels as so at times).

Everything moves fast nowadays and we constantly feel the pressure to keep up with it so we don’t fall behind. However, it’s vital that we continue to move at a healthy pace because if we don’t keep up with ourselves then we won’t be able to keep up with everything and everyone else in the future.
